Introducing students to the Latin language.
Latin is taught from Year 5 onwards. Lessons are delivered in an active and engaging way with a high emphasis on connecting Latin language and Roman culture with other languages and modern life. We aim to enrich our study of Latin through a variety of trips and activities.
In Years 5 & 6, we follow the ‘Minimus’ course. This is an engaging introduction to Latin, heavily focussed on Roman Britain and on myths and legends. The grammar elements of the course are absorbed almost without noticing.
At KS3 we study Latin grammar more formally, though the approach is still activity-based. We also take Year 8 on a trip to Bath to see the Roman Baths.
From Year 9, most pupils choose to study two languages out of French, Spanish and Latin. A select group is invited to study all three for a further year. New pupils entering the school at this point can opt to study Latin as a new subject, and will follow an accelerated programme for a year, which will bring able students to the point where they can select Latin as a GCSE option.
