GCSE Options

Pupils at Kneller Hall are able to study a breadth of GCSE Subjects to allow a balance of study to keep a variety of A Level, university and career options open.

The GCSE's that are available for our pupils are outlined in the booklet below. Pupils select GCSE options in the spring term of Year 9.

In Years 10 and 11, pupils follow a two-year programme of study leading to GCSE or iGCSE examinations. The programme has two elements: CORE subjects and OPTIONAL subjects.

All pupils follow a course in all the core subjects. These are complemented by four optional subjects all leading to GCSE, chosen from a possible list of ten. Having a choice of four options offers the opportunity to design an individual learning programme within certain principles. These principles are to ensure there is breadth and balance in the range of subjects you choose.

The CORE subjects are:

  • Biology
  • Chemistry
  • Physics
  • English Language
  • English Literature
  • Mathematics

In addition, other compulsory elements include:

Games (taught during a Games afternoon lasting 2 hours) Personal, Social Health & Economic Education,

The OPTIONAL subjects are:

  • Art
  • Business Studies and Economics
  • Computing*
  • Drama
  • French
  • Geography
  • History
  • Latin
  • Music
  • Physical Education
  • Religious Studies
  • Spanish

*All those wishing to take Computing will need to be able to demonstrate strong existing knowledge in the subject, including an understanding of basic programming, hardware and software knowledge, and general computer use skills. This will be assessed by the Director of ICT, and where necessary a discussion with parents regarding a pupil’s suitability to undertake the course may be arranged.
