School-Directed Courses

A New Approach to Learning

From September 2027, Kneller Hall School will introduce an exciting new School‑Directed Course (SDC) at Key Stage 4 - a forward‑thinking alternative designed to sit alongside our established GCSE programme. Pupils will continue to have the option to take a full suite of GCSEs, or they may choose to replace one GCSE with the SDC, enriching and complementing their other subjects while developing highly transferable skills.

Our first SDC will focus on Global Leadership, reflecting our ambition to prepare young people not just for examinations, but for life in a rapidly changing, interconnected world.

Why Choose a School‑Directed Course?

The SDC is a future‑facing qualification that goes beyond the limitations of traditional GCSEs. Designed in‑house by our experienced teaching team and professionally developed specifically for our move to Kneller Hall, the course will be fully endorsed by EduQual, with bespoke learning outcomes, assessment methods, and resources.

This approach allows us to:

  • Explore themes not currently covered in GCSE specifications.
  • Take learning beyond the classroom, connecting knowledge to the real world.
  • Teach broader content in an innovative, investigative, and more contextualised way.
  • Develop skills that are harder to cultivate through exam‑heavy courses.

Course Overview: Kneller Hall Global Leadership Award

The course consists of four units, brought together under the overarching theme of Global Leadership. Pupils develop a deep understanding of the challenges and opportunities of living in a globalised world, while learning how individuals and communities can drive positive change through ethical decision-making.

The four equally weighted units:

  • Social Inclusion: Decoding Social Inequalities.
  • Sustainability: Tackling Climate Change.
  • Human Rights: Advocating for Justice.
  • Political Power: Leading Change in Our Interconnected World.

Each of the above units follows a carefully sequenced structure:

  1. Core Knowledge – pupils gain the essential historical and contextual understanding needed for the topic
  2. Global Case Studies – analysing and evaluating real‑world examples from around the world
  3. National Perspectives – bringing learning closer to home
  4. Local and Regional Innovation – exploring how change happens in pupils’ own communities

Innovative Assessment

Assessment within the SDC moves beyond terminal examinations, allowing pupils to demonstrate their learning in authentic and varied ways including through collaboration and the development of critical thinking skills.

  • Each unit includes a short written assessment taken during the course to ensure strong understanding of key concepts.
  • Final unit assessments adopt a creative, real‑world format, such as TED‑style talks, panel discussions, and presentations.
  • The course is completed by Easter of Year 11, freeing up valuable summer term time for focused GCSE revision.
  • Fewer terminal exams help reduce pressure during an already demanding exam period.

Preparing Pupils for the Modern World

The School‑Directed Course is a bold expression of Kneller Hall’s commitment to innovative education. It equips pupils with the confidence, skills, and global awareness they need to succeed—academically, professionally, and as responsible global citizens.

At Kneller Hall, we do not simply prepare pupils for exams.

We prepare them for the future.
